My material grandmother and grandfather, Violet Ray and Ferdinand Francois Rouquier, both came over from Europe. Violet came with her brother, George, when they were in their early teens on April 17, 1920. Later on, Violet went back to Europe to take her sister-in-law Clara to America on Dec 26, 1924. While on that ship coming to America, Violet met her future husband, Ferdinand. It happens that both were going to Illinois. Violet, George and Clara came from Switzerland and Ferdinand came from France. Ferdinand got sea sick while being a cook on the ship. That was his free ticket. He could not work so he had to pay his way to America with no money. He asked Violet if she knew someone who would help. She did, and after a lengthy courtship, they were married on May 7, 1927.
