Andrea's Story

My mom, age 15 at the time, and her family left Hungary in 1945 with a few suitcases, as the communists were coming in. They lived in a displaced persons' camp in Germany for five years! They came to America by boat, the 'General Greeley', where she met my dad, who immigrated in 1956.

I was born in NYC in 1961, and since they both spoke Hungarian to me in the home, I did not speak English when I started Kindergarten. That was a painful situation for me, one that I remember well. My 21 year old son, who does not speak Hungarian, has been granted dual citizenship due to his heritage and now lives and works in beautiful Budapest!
